WILLIAM J. DOHERTY, of Nanuet, NY, former resident of Great Falls, Montana, died of cancer on February 19, 2006 at VA Hospital in Bronx, NY. He was 68. Mr. Doherty worked as a government accounting tec. for the Department of Defense in Mountain View, CA for 12 years before retiring in 1989. Mr. Doherty was born November 17, 1937 in Bronx, NY to William J. Doherty and Helen Brett. He was educated from K to 8th grade at St. Agatha's Home, Nanuet, NY and St. Agnes Home, Sparkill, NY. He graduated from TZ High School in 1955. Mr. Doherty served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1965, attaining the rank of Petty Officer, E 5 DT 2. He belonged to the VFW Post 1082 in Montana and the VFW Post 7370 in Pearl River, NY. He also belonged to the John H. Secor Post 329, American Legion, Pearl River, NY and Catholic War Veterans of the U.S. in Bronx, NY. On June 4, 1977, he married Anita Miller in San Jose, CA. Mr. Doherty lived in Nanuet for the past 6 years. Before that, he lived in Great Falls, Montana and San Jose , CA. Mr. Doherty will be remembered for his love of family and his two dogs Tara and Otto. He will also be remembered for his great sense of humor, “God Bless Everyone“ and his humanity and love for his country. His home was an open door with an open heart. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Lavigne of Nanuet, NY, son William Doherty of Sunnyvale ,CA; brother-in-law Robert Edsall of Pearl River, NY; ex-wife Anita Miller of Great Falls, MT; niece Rose Ann Mercado and husband Efraim of Nanuet, NY; nephews William Moore, Nanuet, NY, Fred Lavigne, FL. Robert Edsall and wife Diane of Pearl River, NY, and niece Lynn Edsall. He is predeceased by his son George Doherty (1993), sister Helen Edsall (1993) , nephew James Edsall (2003), Father William Doherty (1977), mother Helen Brett Doherty (1940) brother-in-law Kenneth Lavigne (1990) and niece Dorothy Moore (1997). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Friday at St. Anthony Church 34 E Route 59, Nanuet, NY. Burial will follow at nearby St. Anthony's Cemetery, Nanuet, NY. Rectory Tel. 845-623-2138.
